What to do against musty smells in the wardrobe - tips from the TUBIE shirt ironing team

Perhaps you know the problem. You have freshly washed your clothes and optimally dried and ironed them with the TUBIE shirt ironing dummy and after a short time in the wardrobe they smell musty again. This usually only happens if you have an old wooden wardrobe in which unpleasant odours have settled. But what can you do about the musty smell of clothes? We from the ironing machine team will tell you how to get your wardrobe smelling fresh again.

To get the mustiness out of rustic wooden cupboards, an old household remedy, namely vinegar or vinegar essence, has proved its worth. Vinegar is an all-round disinfection talent and also disinfects wood, among other things. Furthermore, vinegar also removes unpleasant odours in the long term. We at the TUBIE Ironing Doll Team recommend gently rubbing the wood with vinegar and then letting the cupboard air out well. To avoid skin irritation, be sure to wear gloves.

To keep the clothes in the wardrobe fresh and fragrant again for a long time, we shirt and blouse ironers use simple tricks. For example, you can hang a bar of packed soap, a scented sachet or a scented ball in the wardrobe. Believe it or not, a bowl of coffee beans or fresh coffee serves the same purpose. Clothes that you don't wear that often should be taken out of the wardrobe to be aired and pulled onto the ironing robot or hung out in the fresh air.

If all efforts have not helped, the problem could be deeper and the cupboard could be infested with mould. In this case, check the cupboard for mould stains and treat them with mould cleaner or high-proof alcohol from the pharmacy. Before treating the mould, however, you should try it on an inconspicuous spot to see if the alcohol or the cleaner attacks the wood.

If you cannot detect any mould, you should also check the wall against which the cupboard is placed. Basically, there should always be a little space between the wall and the cupboard so that the air can circulate and the back wall of the cupboard does not get damp.

But the wardrobe doesn't always have to be the problem, as we from the ironing machine team know. Often the clothes themselves are the cause of musty smells. If the clothes are washed at too low a temperature, germs can stick to them and the clothes smell musty, even though they are fresh out of the washing machine. We at the Ironing Machine Team simply add a dash of hygienic rinse aid or vinegar to the fabric softener compartment for delicate laundry that may only be washed at 30 degrees, as this kills germs and bacteria that are responsible for the unpleasant odours. Also make sure that only completely dry clothes go into the wardrobe, because damp clothes are the optimal breeding ground for odour bacteria. When the seasons change, it is also advisable to wash summer or winter clothes thoroughly before storing them, as this also helps to avoid mould or moth infestation.
