How to pack jackets and shirts properly for travel

At the moment, travel is rather limited due to Covid 19, but now at Whitsun some people are finally going on holiday again. Not everyone takes a jacket and shirts with them on holiday, but these items of clothing are indispensable on business trips. Read in the current TUBIE Shirt Ironer Blog how to store jackets and shirts crease-free in your suitcase.

We at the TUBIE Ironing Doll Team recommend stowing heavy items, such as shoes, at the bottom of the suitcase. Once all the heavy items are stowed, the shirts should be folded well and stacked staggered (not on top of each other). It is advisable to place tissue paper between them or to put the individual shirts in a colourless plastic bag. This prevents the garments from slipping. Attention! We strongly advise against using coloured plastic bags, because they can stain and destroy the clothes when they get wet, for example when the shower gel runs out. Instead of folding the shirts, you can also roll them up.

The top layer in the suitcase should be jackets or blazers. Turn the lining outwards when packing so that the fabric is protected and possible creases are only visible in the lining. Also push the shoulders of the jacket outwards by pressing your fist into the fabric until the shoulder pops out. Then fold the jacket lengthwise in the middle so that the lining is still on the outside. Now fold again, in the middle, so that a square is formed. Again, use clear plastic bags or tissue paper.

If you want to be on the safe side, put shirts and suits in a garment bag. Then everything will most likely stay wrinkle-free. However, such garment bags are quite bulky and impractical to carry if you are also travelling with a suitcase.

If a few wrinkles do creep in, there is a good old trick to get shirts and jackets reasonably smooth again without an iron, iron or shirt iron. Hang the wrinkled shirts in the shower cubicle of your hotel room and turn the water on very hot for a few minutes. But do not get the clothes wet. The steam created by this process will smooth out the clothes again. Afterwards, you can smooth out the remaining wrinkles by hand.
